JANET FROM ANOTHER PLANET
Beadwork and Dolls
By
Janet Kay Skeen
Janet Kay’s work has been described accurately as technically good,
a little off center and always a bit quirky.
COLOR IS MY PASSION.
Pink and Purple “Collar”
This collar is inspired by the beautiful book "the Art and Design of Bead Embroidery" by Sherry Serifini and Heidi Kummli. It has antique Swarovski crystals, vintage buttons, drusy, pearls and a plastic cabochon accented with fresh water pearls. $3500
Turquoise Gems and Brown Bead Embroidery
This particular necklace is not for sale, but I can do something very similar for special clients. These gem stones were a Christmas gift from her son & daughter in law, Ron & Linda Snelling. Call for prices. The turquoise comes from a mine in Montezuma, Mexico and contains an unusual amount of copper.
Green and Yellow Ring
a collaboration with Dustin Wedekind. Huge for ring--fun to wear and comfortable. There are several styles. More photos of these rings to follow later this year.
Purple Cuff
This bracelet was a finalist in the Fire Mountain Gems contest in 2007
This bracelet measures 3½ inches wide.

Analogous Cuff.
This bracelet is sold and was featured in an article in Beadwork magazine,
October/November, 2006 issue.
This piece measures 2½ inches wide.
Special orders for cuffs begin at $400.
This is Janet Kay’s newest piece— called Fantasy Garden Necklace—a variation on fringe and more fringe featuring a lamp glass bead made by
John Olson.
People ask how many hours and she answers “So who’s counting? Suffice it to say “Many hours”.
Special orders begin at $3500.

Purple Fringe Necklace was a piece made several years ago and continues to be a piece of jewelry that I wear often. It is comfortable and easy to wear.
I can make special orders for the customer starting at $400.

Tutti Frutti— this beaded doll is about 7 inches high and 4 inches wide. It is the traditional “Goddess” shape that I have used for 12 years with variations on each one, no two alike. This doll, like most of my dolls, is festooned with vintage beads and sequins.
Price: $500.

Delores—(remember Dolores Del Rio?) is my latest piece that employs some found objects—a pair of really awful earrings from the junk store and pieces of a necklace. This doll, like most of my dolls, sports vintage beads and sequins.
Price: $500
These dolls were among the first pieces that I added beads. When I painted them, they seemed to need something more—and beads were exactly what I needed to finish them, to my delight. The girls are available—the boys are sold.
The pieces were featured on the cover of “Designing the Doll” by Susana Oroyon. The girls are mounted separately in black boxes and are $330 each.
Carnival in Brazil made in 2001, all beaded with vintage sequins and Lampglass beads are made by Susan Simonds.
$350 for the pair & includes plexi-glass stand. Each doll is 5”x 3”. Both pieces with stand are 9”x 9”.
What I Did on My Summer Vacation, with frame, 9” tall x 12” wide. I worked on this piece of bead embroidery without having a plan or design, but just worked as Spirit guided. When it was near completion, I realized it is the picture I carry in my mind of the Japanese Gardens in Portland, Oregon. This was a part of “The Beaded Cloth” at Interweave Press, 2002. Not for Sale
No, this is not a cat—it is a devil entitled There is Something About You That Makes Me Feel Itchy or just “Itchy”. It is a cathartic piece I made when someone hurt my feelings. This piece is currently traveling with Bead International 2006/07 and was in The Beaded Doll with Interweave Press. Not for sale.
